im from the twin cities, went to college and learned to swing in Bemidji, now im in des moines and have no idea what to do down here

When you know where to look, there are quite a few dancing opportunities in DM. Here are a few:

Swing Des Moines, (3rd Fridays at WDM community center, http://www.swingdesmoines.com/

Step Into Swing, (1st Saturday dance and Thursday nights at Java Joe's) http://www.stepintoswing.com/

Summerset Winery, (has live music every Sunday afternoon - south of Des Moines about 8 miles) http://www.summersetwine.com/

Lake Robbins, the oldest continuously operating ballroom in the US with a variety of music, http://www.lakerobbins.com/

Look in the DM Register Datebook on Thursdays, look for music at White Oak Winery, Snus Winery, etc.
