So, my newest favorite swing song is "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho" by Sidney Bechet. That song is friggin awesome! Every time I hear it, I just want to Swing Out. I hope I don't play it so much that i'll get sick of it.

So, my current favorite is "Let 'er go" by Fletcher Henderson. Kind of fast, but a good tune.

From what I have heard from a reputable source (Travis of Seattle) Sidney Bechet is the Freddie Mercury of all swing musicians. I am inclined to concur. I love his sound. It's not the sappy-go-lucky blind joy that bothers me about some swing music. It has depth of feeling. It's not just the rhythm moving my body, the sounds are moving me emotionally and I can truly feel invested in the dance.
I love music with a minor key, a gypsy-jazz sort of sound, and a bass line that just keeps chugging.

Man, that is totally right on. I haven't listened to a lot of Bechet until recently. That guy kills it. And I've also really gotten into the sound of Gypsey Jazz. After listening to the Twin Cities Hot Club, I was all about that stuff. I'm really excited that we are getting Robert Bell's Hot Swing Combo at HSF. That event is gonna be sick!

Robert Bell's Hot Swing Combo gets me hot and swinging and then combines the two.

Ahhh...Bechet. SB is indeed the FM of jazz (and FM is the SB of pretty much everything else).
"Joshua" is a very catchy tune but, in my opinion, it does not capture SBs talents at all as there is very little soloing in that song. If you really want to be bludgeoned by SBs awesomeness (a ritual that I submit myself to daily) listen to "China Boy" with Bechet playing alongside Muggsy Spanier - that song has Bechet at his creative best. Maybe not the best song for Lindy Hop but it is the very essence of jazz and swing.

It's not super swingy, but dang does it take every ounce of my will to stop me from dancing to "Black and Tan Fantasy" -- that is, the Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington version from their album The Great Summit: The Master Takes. Don't get me wrong, it does swing, but it is Ellington's equivalent to a funeral march, which is why I chose the version with Armstrong because he gives it that true New Orleans touch that gets your backyard a'swivelin' and gives your shim sham a shimmy.
