It's been a long time in the making, but the ISU Cyclone Swing Society is finally having its first concert. The Al Welsh Orchestra is coming to ISU on March 8, 2008 at 8PM. Admission will be $5 for the public, $3 for members. A half hour lesson will be provided. Come one, come all to ISU's Swing Dance Fiasco!

As a side note, I am trying to get a group of our members and members of 'Orchesis 2' (a modern dance group) to do the Shim Sham using the Imperial March theme (from star wars). This will occur on Sunday April 20th, if anybody wants to come watch.

March 8th. We will make sure and mention it in our news letter and at the Thursday Night Swing Socail. I think you're doing a great job. Interesting theory on the shim sham/star wars thing.....................

That is bizonkers. It's like the opposite of the shim sham revolution - it's like the shim sham invasion! That's some fun imagery, a dance party getting crashed by a whole batallion of imperial storm troopers doing some tacky annies.

I'm sure your performance will be funny, interesting, entertaining, comedic, and/or any combination of the previous. Can you do it in SW costumes? Maybe the textiles and clothing department would let the students make costumes as a project. Eh, seems like too much work. Nevermind.

I thought about costumes, but I may be able to get by with people using some old clothes or something from the goodwill store (example: Meredith has a white bath robe and can style her hair like Princess Leia). I'll figure something out. I am also going to order some cheap light sabers. UNFORTUNATELY, I am not getting the level of interest I was hoping for Sad

, so I may end up using another song. The song from the Prairie Cats that goes "Five martinis and a beer" came to my mind recently, so I might make a simple swing routine from that.

I tried looking into newspaper ads, but each newspaper I talked to wants to charge an arm and a leg for a 2x2inch classified ad. So that's out of the question. PLEASE get the word out. Thanks!

It went really well. A lot of people had fun. Larry, Rae, Meredith, and I led the Shim Sham, and I did a birthday jam (though nobody seemed to understand what to do there). We weren't able to sell any t-shirts, but oh well. And not a single Hawkeye showed. I was surprised.

The bad thing is, even though we all had so much fun (I was SOOO exhausted by the end of the night, especially after dancing the polka three times in a row), the club actually lost money. If I had re-scheduled for another night, maybe it would have been different. The important thing is, people had fun, and lots of people kept asking if we were going to do it again this year. Maybe if the club keeps going next year it will happen, and with the way things are looking now, the Cyclone Swing Society may live on past May 2008.

So what was your excuse, Sarah? (ahem....*glares at you*)
